Having a trained dog is a great thing for you and your dog’s happiness. If your dog is trained well, then you should both know what is to be expected of the other. Once trained, you will not have to worry about behavior problems when taken out into public or left home alone. It might take some effort, but teaching your dog tricks and manners is an important investment in everyone’s happiness.
The first rule to remember when you begin to house train your puppy is that what you feed them will eventually come out the other end. To keep your puppies toiletry habits regular, feed him a high quality food 2-3 times a day at the same time each day. This ensures your dog won’t have accidents as you’ll know when to expect a trip outside.
Don’t overdo your training sessions, keep them brief and interesting for best results. Remember that a dog has a short attention span and cannot focus on one thing for too long. Keep sessions to a minimum at first. Target 10 minute sessions for increased success.
If your training program is to be successful, you must be committed to asserting yourself firmly. You should not be extremely strict or loving all the time. Find a balance on gentle firmness to use with your dog. This ensures you have a positive relationship between the dog and yourself.
In order to decrease barking, stay around the offending item. Some dogs bark in response to a specific sound, whereas others become excited in the presence of other people or dogs. Your dog will know the difference and will understand that there’s no reason to bark when presented these situations.
As you train your dog, have an eye on other dogs when walking yours. You need to be well aware of any dogs that seem aggressive. If you notice an aggressive or antisocial dog, keep your dog away from it.
You should always praise your dog for his good behavior while you are training him. Show enthusiasm, smile widely and make sure the dog gets treats after exhibiting the behaviors you want. Do not reward unwanted behavior. This will cause your dog to think that he is doing something good.
When you begin training your dog, do not give him a treat or reward just to make him stop misbehaving. When this happens, you are teaching your dog that he is boss. Refrain from giving your dog treats for bad behavior, as this reinforces something negative.
When you are training your dog, try to keep your training sessions on the short side. Any longer than fifteen minutes spent training your dog will exhaust his ability to concentrate and lead to frustration. Always reward your dog with praise and attention after a training session.
Even when he tries your patience, you must consistently show patience and care. Sometimes we forget that our pets don’t understand our language, much less our thoughts. The only thing it can understand is your tone and physical gestures. It will not know why you are behaving in such a manner. If you or your dog seem frustrated, it’s time for a break.
You need to find out how to recognize when your dog needs to go to the bathroom. Dogs will behave in a certain way when they start to ‘feel the need’. If you know what they do before hand you will see that they need to go outside. You will have an easier time of house training if you understand the natural tendencies of your dog.
When teaching about sitting, have your dog remain standing while the treat is held in front of him. Then you should keep their attention on the treat as you move your hand towards their rear side. Your dog will look up as your hand passes behind his head. This can help engage your dog to sit down.
When training your dog against improper chewing, be sure to set them up for success. Excessive chewing is not only damaging to your precious objects, but dangerous to your dog. Hairbrushes, nylons, and other common household items pose a danger to dogs and can lead to choking and obstructions.
Wee-wee pads, also known as puppy pads, could actually make potty-training harder for your puppy. Pads that dogs pee on are viewed by them as okay areas that they can go and they will smell the area as well. Dogs also believe that anything shaped like a pad is acceptable to use as a potty. For the sake of consistency, train your dog to always use the bathroom outside.
Your dog’s mind has to be worked out, too. For dogs that constantly chew, puzzle toys for canines can build their problem-solving skills and appeal to their nature. There are many puzzle toys from which to choose, so go with one that suits your dog’s preferences.
It is crucial that everyone who interacts with your dog uses the exact same command phrases as you do. For instance, if your dog gets on the sofa and he hears you saying “get off,” but your husband says “down boy”, it may confuse your dog. Having everyone on the same page when it comes to command usage will make training much easier, more successful and be far more pleasant for your dog.
Training your dog is essentially establishing relationship rules, and, like with people, enjoyment with each other will be so much more since the groundwork has been established. Always provide consistent support for lessons you have imparted to the dog. Maintain discipline and watch for any attitude changes. When your dog has a solid foundation in the basics, his potential is unlimited.
